The Challenge

Ottawa is no stranger to harsh winter conditions. And each year, when the snow begins to fall, homeowners are tasked with figuring out how to clear it from their driveways and walkways. Traditionally, they’ve only had two options: 1. sign a season-long contract with a local provider, or, 2. do it themselves. To entrepreneur and Ottawa native, Ken Dale, this status quo couldn’t continue. With over 25 years in the snow and ice removal industry, he noticed an underserved segment looking for more flexibility. Not everyone wanted to sign a contract, but most people still wanted an option to have their property professionally cleared on a case-by-case basis.

The demand was there, but the system was not. Luckily, the on-demand app market was growing rapidly, creating the perfect storm (pun intended) to launch the Uber of snow clearing. Ken wanted to move quickly on his idea, but he needed a team of tech experts to bring his vision to life. Another stroke of luck, he found Iversoft.

The Solution

We created TouchPlow, an iOS and Android mobile app that connects customers with local snow removal providers using their phone’s location services. Professional plow drivers, snow removal companies, and snowblowers can register as service providers through the app, enabling them to access a larger market and grow their businesses. Because these providers act as business partners — making their experience in the app just as important as customers’ — we designed a simple UX and flow for them. Whether a provider has a background in tech or tends to feel uncomfortable learning new platforms, they can sign up for TouchPlow and book jobs with ease.

Of course, we made things easy for customers too. When someone needs snow cleared, they simply pick the service they want, when they want to schedule it, the equipment needed, and their budget. No contracts required. When a customer logs in to book a service, the price options they’re given are based on weather conditions. We integrated a local weather system API to automatically alter prices during heavy snowfalls to balance supply and demand. To make the experience seamless, we kept the payment solution in-app. Once payment information is submitted, customers can book jobs winter after winter without thinking about it again.

The Results

First launched in Ottawa in 2015, TouchPlow was one of the first to market in the on-demand plowing industry and now serves over 80 cities across Canada. Intuitive to use, the app has won App of the week by Phone Freaks, Mobilesyrup, iPhone in Canada, and Techopia.
